ID Theft in Children

Just thought I would add share some new information on rising ID theft of Children in the U.S.
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has reported 400,000 complaints on child ID theft in the last year.
The rate of child ID theft has increased by about 78% since 2003, according to the FTC.
Children’s ID and credit are the easiest to steal because they don’t have much credit to start with and they don’t use their credit profile since they are still young. It goes undetected for years since most parents are unaware that their children may even have a credit profile due to ID theft.
The stealing of children’s ID for fraud purposes by criminals affects children in all future credit related transactions including applying for financial aid for college.

I have found a site, www.familysecure.com that helps parents deal with issues of ID theft and fraud in children. This site allows parents to check if their children are being victimized and if a credit file already exists. By signing up, parents are alerted real-time online so that they can proactively exercise damage control of any ID theft that has occurred. The site also offers a $2 million guarantee whereby, if the member is ever victimized, the $2 million guarantee will provide for any fees that has caused the parents and the child because of ID theft and fraud. If a child is a victim of identity theft, parents also have the option to place a 90-day fraud alert on their personal credit file which requires lenders to contact them directly before extending credit.

I wanted to share this with everyone because as a mother of a young child, I don’t want this to happen to him nor any other children or persons living in the U.S. All parents are concerned with protecting their children in every aspect of life, and their credit and Identity is one that I find most important. I hope that this can be shared on your blog site so that other parents will become aware of this ID theft epidemic.

Thank you for taking the time to read and share.
